Proverbs 14:17 An impulsive person has a short fuse and can ruin everything, but the wise show self-control. (TPT)

Strictly speaking, there are no such things as good and bad impulses. Think of a piano. It has not got two kinds of notes on it, the ‘right’ notes and the ‘wrong’ ones. — C. S. Lewis

The guidance of the Holy Spirit helps us discern whether our impulses will lead to wisdom or regret. Every day we make quick decisions that affect our relationships, finances, and wellbeing. Some impulses bring blessing. Others can lead to stress, conflict, and disappointment.

Impulse buying is a common example. A simple shopping trip can quickly become expensive. Chocolates, clothes, phones, jewellery, or even vehicles can become emotional purchases. Spending money may feel good in the moment. However, careless decisions can damage relationships and create financial pressure.

At the same time, being overly cautious is not healthy either. Some opportunities require courage and quick action. A strong instinct can sometimes protect us or move us forward. For example, you may suddenly decide to take another road home and later discover there was danger ahead. These moments remind us to pay attention to wise promptings. The guidance of the Holy Spirit regarding impulsive decisions require discernment.

Guidance of the Holy Spirit in Daily life

The world often encourages us to trust our instincts. In relationships, work, and leadership, impulse can play an important role. Yet Christians are called to test every impulse carefully.

Where does the impulse come from? Is it driven by fear, pride, emotion, or the flesh? Or is the guidance of the Holy Spirit leading us?

The Holy Spirit guides and directs His people. In Book of Psalms 23, David wrote about being led beside still waters. David did not rush ahead impulsively. Instead, he trusted the Lord’s leading and protection even in the presence of his enemies. When like David we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit impulse decisions become wiser and more peaceful.

Learning to pause & pray

Sometimes the Holy Spirit tells us to stop and wait. At other times, He calls us to act quickly and boldly. Wisdom comes when we pause, pray, and seek God before making decisions.

As believers, we must learn discernment. Not every feeling comes from God. However, we should not ignore His prompting either. The guidance of the Holy Spirit brings peace, wisdom, and self-control.

May we be led not by reckless impulse, but by the steady guidance of God’s love.

  1. Hmm. I have to think about this. I never equated impulses to gut feelings before, but you may have a point.
